Buckeyes

These lose their magnificent color soon enough, but you can keep them somewhat fresh by rubbing them in your palms, where they will pick up some oil.
Pioneers always kept some on hand to rub for luck, thinking that they would be good for rheumatism because they look a little like bone joints. They are poisonous unless you roast and soak them a la native American methods.
