To Doodletown
Photo: E.G.
This glazed abstract sculpture of a bracket mushroom is called lingzhi in China, reishi in Japan, and is highly prized for its alleged medicinal properties. In fact, this might be a hundred dollars worth of it. The genus is ganoderma; it was growing on a hemlock, so it's probably tsugae. Size: half the size of a dinner plate. Shellac-like surface, beautiful and oh so weird like the kingdom of fungi in general. B the hobbit said it was used as an aphrodisiac, but I only found these other details later, after we left it and its siblings on the stump. There were nine of us walking in Doodletown under the shadow of the Bear Saturday. Perfect weather, perfect day for banana fish.
