Brooklyn Mammals

What species of mammals live in Brooklyn? I mean the non-domesticated variety. Norway and brown rats and the common house mouse, of course, but they’re all practically domesticated. We also have several species of bats. There are also field mice, rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, and chipmunks. And yes, we have opossum. And, news to me, woodchucks! The City Birder goes undercover at a Green-Wood den.

What else have you heard about or seen?

No raccoons or skunks? Coyotes? deer?

Woops! Just reread and noticed you did say raccoons.

Coyotes have been seen in Manhattan and the Bronx, but not Brooklyn to my knowledge. I assume deer get into Queens from Long Island, but I don't know if LI has a deer problem like NJ, upstate NY, and New England.

And certainly here [deer [problem, i.e.]. We have a deer crossing sign on a road that runs from SU campus to the Manley Field House. Right smack in the middle of town.

Skunks for sure. Red fox are a possibility--they're in Queens and the Bronx and could be in Brooklyn, but are very shy and hard to spot. Only a matter of time for coyotes and deer (LI has a huge deer problem). Moles perhaps? That is so cool about the woodchuck!
