mysterious oak
In the Nethermead.
Update: these are from a sawtooth oak, Q. acutissima. Couldn't find the tree in a couple of field guides, as it turns out to be an imported species, although widely planted in the US. David Sibley, the famous bird guy, now has a guide to trees which includes this species.
